My internship took place in the information technology department (IT) in the Encinitas City Hall. The department manages every project involving computer repair, replacement and at times destruction. Below, I have described different summaries of my excellent experience working as an intern in the City of Encinitas Council Building.
Below, I have attached before and after pictures of one of my bigger projects I took on. This was one of the server rooms I was tasked with organizing, cleaning and re-arranging if need be. This was by far easier said than done!
{ WORK SAMPLES COMING } Below, I have attached samples of work I did on a server that was having problems. I first needed to eliminate any possible hardware issues. Then, if the hardware wasn't an issue, it was my task to re-set up the array of drives in the system and re-install the OS. This meant complicated and specific procedures traveling through the BIOS on the server. My mentor's domain was the command prompts and systems itself, and I was impressed by his wealth of knowledge. { WORK SAMPLES COMING } I learned an incredible amount of priceless knowledge in the form of experience. If anything, I come away from this internship with the knowledge to assist me in my professional career later on in life, whatever it may become. Some specific skills I acquired were accurate communication and coordination with other team members. These two skills were enhanced during this internship because of the job description I filled. My main goal/purpose was to help my mentor and his team with whatever they may have needed. This included many tasks that interns were not to take on because of their importance level. However, they felt I was confident with computer hardware and software, and because of this, I had to be very precise with what they desired. I had to be very clear on what task I was completing, because often times it was tasks that the team members themselves would be taking on. This meant that there was usually hidden/less obvious instructions and procedures that if left unspecified, could get staff members fired. It felt very refreshing to feel as important as a team member.
My experience at City Hall was very positive. My mentor made sure that the department was aware of my presence, and most everyone greeted me kindly. There were many high profile tasks that kept me interested and engaged. I had four official big projects that I completed during my time at the City Council Building. One of which was clearing out and organizing a large server room that is essentially connected to my mentor's office. Although my mentor does not use the server room as much as his staff members do, he was very impressed at the progress I made on it. He knew that the work I did would enable his team to work better, faster, and more efficiently when every item has a place or category, and most of everything is easily accessible.
The grand organization and clean up of the server room near my mentor's office took 4 out of the 5 weeks we had for Internship. (PICTURES COMING, BEFORE AND AFTER CLEAN UP) My internship took place at the City Council Building of Encinitas. My first day of internship went very well, and briefly crossed the line into too well. In the morning I was able to get coffee and start my day at around 7am at the City of Encinitas. I did arrive at 630am, but needed to be introduced and such. The division I was working in was IT. Because of my past experience in computers, I was changing out computer parts throughout the day. My main role, along with the aforementioned computer hardware repairs, was to run errands for my mentor as well as his staff. Although my job description was not as desireable as I would have liked, I could tell how much the department needed a fresh set of hands and eyes to help motivate clean out/organize and get things done that have been on the back burner for quite some time.
My projects were a big motivating factor when it came to staying busy and proactive in the work environment. The projects truly kept the experience exciting and interesting, and completing each one made the department happy/glad enough to thank me personally... very rewarding experience. |
